Grampians Estate has established an iconic reputation for its cool-climate peppery shiraz. Two vineyards provide the secret to its success: the eight acre Mafeking vineyard, first planted in 1989, is located south of the Great Dividing Range alongside the Grampians National Park, whilst the Great Western St Ethels vineyard features some 130 year-old shiraz vines.
The 2019 Mafeking Gold Chardonnay exhibits a bright and lifted nose of lemon sherbet, crunchy Fuji apples and hints of oyster shell. The palate is rich and intense with lemon, lime and pear juice dominating and just a hint of crème brulee. Soft acidity provides balance and direction. This single vineyard wine was barrel fermented in French Oak.
Available from the Great Western Hotel at $35 a bottle or $10 a glass
